Losi Desert Buggy XL “K&N” Review Summary
The Losi Desert Buggy XL K&N 1/5-Scale was designed to withstand the rigors of intense off-road driving with a terrain-killing 4WD drivetrain, injection molded roll cage, and 4mm aluminum chassis. Featuring a genuine K&N air filter (recognized as a world leader in filter technology) inside that increases air flow for increased engine performance, this buggy car won’t back down when pushed to its limits.
Our experience and Losi Desert Buggy XL “K&N” review
Powered by a 23cc gasoline engine and a gas tank that delivers over 40 minutes of relentless action on a full tank, the Losi Desert Buggy XL K&N reaches up to 30+ mph straight out of the box and 40-45 mph with modification. At this speed, it is much faster than the Losi 5T stadium truck but not as durable.
This massive 1/5-Scale buggy is built on an equally rugged, relentless and durable 4mm chassis, however it also comes with many plastic parts that aren’t durable enough to withstand crashes, so be prepared with backup aluminum or carbon fiber stock parts.
The Losi Desert Buggy XL K&N features big oil-filled, coil-over shocks and an independent suspension system that enables this buggy to handle the brutality of the off-road like a champ. A wider front bumper would have been helpful though – the front bumper is too narrow to protect the front wheels from collision. We noticed that the suspension compress and droop over some gnarly conditions when blasting through sand and dirt.
While driving the Losi Desert Buggy XL K&N, we found that the inline engine set-up gives the buggy good balance and handling. The buggy turns fairly well for the amount of weight the steering assembly and servos have to deal with.
Once up in the higher rpm range with some momentum underway, the Losi Desert Buggy XL K&N comes with pretty good power that will launch it off of jumps, carve cool turns on berms while making you take a few steps back as it speeds by.
The Losi Desert Buggy XL K&N has excellent braking ability, and is able to slow up well after long straightway runs and after short bursts transitioning from corner to corner. The springs releasing pressure on the plates as you let off the trigger also allows this buggy to have zero brake hang-up.
This is a ready to run 1/5 off-road four wheel drive machine that comes with both quality and style. While the 23cc engine is good and fun for newbies, we recommend adding at least a pipe to pep things up sooner rather than later. This is a great off-road RC vehicle to go out bashing with friends and flat out having a good time.
